We Trained an AI to Reveal the Ultimate Halloween Costume

Jonathan Zalman + the Sandgarden Engineering team

To me, the “ultimate” Halloween costume is, of course, to dress up like the Ultimate Warrior, the face-painted former WWF champion from the early 1990s. Just kidding. Mostly.

Seriously, though. While this might be my idea of a pun-tastic Halloween costume, it’s a narrow interpretation of the question:  What is the ultimate Halloween costume?

So I asked ChatGPT:

The ultimate Halloween costume combines creativity, personalization, and impact. Here are a few ideas that could be considered “ultimate” depending on your style:
1. Time-Traveler: Create a mash-up of fashion from various eras. Wear a Victorian jacket, futuristic goggles, medieval boots, and carry steampunk gadgets. It’s a costume that lets you experiment with materials and time periods, making it both original and intricate.
2. Living Artwork: Dress up as a famous painting or sculpture come to life. Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” or da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” could inspire a head-to-toe artistic interpretation, with hand-painted clothing or creative makeup.
3. Metamorphosis: Start the night as one thing, then transform into another. You could start as a human, then peel off layers throughout the evening to reveal a creature or alien underneath, creating a dynamic costume experience.
4. AI Overlord: Inspired by tech trends, this costume could feature glowing lights, robotic features, and a sense of futuristic style. You could even add voice modulation to sound more robotic, playing with the theme of technology taking over.
What type of costume appeals most to you: fun, scary, intricate, or something completely different? I can help refine it based on that!

Not bad, but not exactly what I was seeking either. I asked for one, not four, and I asked for it to be ultimate. And definitive. You know—the one costume to rule them all.

Defining the Ultimate Halloween Costume

ChatGPT’s suggestions were decent, but they missed a key ingredient: context. The ultimate Halloween costume isn’t just about creativity or personalization—it’s about cultural relevance. It’s about what’s happening right now that’s influencing the zeitgeist.

While ChatGPT can come up with creative ideas, it often needs more specific direction to answer complex questions in a meaningful way. Left on its own, it can rely too heavily on surface-level trends. By refining the scope, guiding it toward specific cultural insights, and feeding it targeted data, we can drive the AI to produce more thoughtful and relevant responses.

To get there, I guided ChatGPT through a more comprehensive process that considered:

  • Cultural Relevance: What are the big trends in pop culture, movies, TV shows, and viral media?
  • Historical Trends: What costumes have dominated the Halloween scene over the past decade?
  • Current Viral Media: What’s trending on TikTok, Instagram, and other social media platforms?

I needed to train ChatGPT to focus on these larger patterns, rather than just pulling together random creative ideas that the AI was pulling from its own sources. This approach would help us get to the real ultimate costume that reflects what people care about right now—and over the last 10 years.

Diversifying Sources: RAG for Comprehensiveness

To get the best results, I had to direct ChatGPT to follow a more rigorous data collection process. Simply asking for costume ideas doesn’t dig deep enough. So, I employed Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), a method that lets AI pull relevant information from a broad pool of sources.

Here’s how we broke it down:

  1. Data Collection: I fed ChatGPT articles on popular movies and TV shows, viral media trends, and classic Halloween tropes. For movies, I pulled info from sites like Rotten Tomatoes; for viral trends, I looked at what’s currently dominating platforms like TikTok and Instagram in order to diversify our sources.

  1. Normalization: After gathering this data, I filtered out outliers, focusing only on the most relevant trends. This is where a vector database (vectorDB) comes in; with a vectorDB we can add knowledge to our AI, like semantic information retrieval and long-term memory. This allows us to use Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) rather than just relying on lengthy lists and references in traditional prompts.
  2. Final Prompting: With all the relevant data organized in the vectorDB, I performed a final prompt to ensure that the AI was pulling from accurate, contextualized, comprehensive data instead of simply relying on the LLM’s most recent history.

And the Ultimate Costume Is… 💅 🧙

After going through this process, ChatGPT delivered: Barbie Witch.

Midjourney was kind enough to generate this with the prompt, "Barbie witch trick-or-treating."

It’s a costume that draws on the massive cultural impact of the 2023 Barbie movie, combined with the enduring popularity of witch costumes. The idea? A playful and glamorous twist—think pink-and-black witch outfits, chic accessories, and maybe even a pink broomstick for good measure.

Add in viral trends like Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, and you’ve got a modernized look that’s relevant to today’s social media crowd.

How We Got There: AI Prompts and Results

To arrive at Barbie Witch, I used several specific prompts that guided the AI through this process:

Prompt 1

1. Nostalgia Core: Throwback content has become big, with creators and influencers tapping into 90s and early 2000s nostalgia. From fashion to pop culture references, expect plenty of vintage-inspired content.

3. FaceTime-Style Storytelling: Many creators are leaning into casual, chatty content that mimics catching up with a friend via FaceTime. This trend emphasizes relatability and connection rather than high production value.
These are just a few examples of safe-for-work viral trends from summer 2024 that are engaging users across multiple platforms.

Prompt 5

Which of the classic halloween characters have been the most popular recently?

Response 5

Recently, classic Halloween characters like witches, vampires, and ghosts have consistently been among the most popular costumes. These staples of Halloween culture hold a timeless appeal that continues year after year.
* Witches remain the top costume choice, particularly because they are versatile and easily customized, allowing people to put their own creative spin on the character.
* Vampires, often inspired by shows like True Blood or What We Do in the Shadows, remain a strong classic due to their mysterious and romantic image.
* Ghosts are another simple, traditional favorite that continues to be popular, often due to their ease of assembly and cultural association with Halloween.
Even with the rise of costumes based on pop culture, these iconic Halloween figures stay popular thanks to their adaptability and association with spooky, supernatural themes.

Prompt 6

Combining these results, what are two possible costumes for halloween 2024

Response 6

For Halloween 2024, two creative costume ideas could combine classic characters with trending viral elements:
1. "Witch with Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses": A modern twist on the classic witch costume, pairing it with the viral Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses that have been trending on social media. This would merge the traditional look of a witch (complete with a broom and hat) with the futuristic, tech-savvy vibe of these smart glasses, reflecting the popularity of witches and viral tech.
2. "Vampire Influencer": Inspired by the "FaceTime-style storytelling" trend where influencers engage with their followers in casual, conversational content, this costume could feature a vampire decked out with a smartphone and accessories, portraying a social media-savvy bloodsucker. This blends the timeless appeal of vampires with the modern influencer aesthetic that's taking over social platforms.

Prompt 7

What about two halloween costumes that combine the popular movies and tv series, with the viral media and classic costumes, would any of those be popular and if so which ones?

Response 7

Two Halloween costume ideas that combine the most popular movies and TV shows of 2024, viral media trends, and classic Halloween characters could be:
1. "Barbie Witch": Drawing from the massive success of the Barbie movie in 2023 and the enduring popularity of witch costumes, this could be a playful and glamorous twist. Imagine a pink-and-black witch outfit with a Barbie aesthetic—bright colors, chic accessories, and even pink broomsticks. Pairing this with viral elements, such as the "Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses" trend, could modernize the costume and make it relevant to social media savvy crowds.
2. "Vampire Influencer from Squid Game": Combining the chilling, masked look from Squid Game (which has remained popular in 2024) with the influencer-style storytelling trend. This costume could feature a vampire character dressed like a Squid Game guard, holding a smartphone and engaging with followers, while still maintaining the eerie, bloodthirsty vibe.
Both costumes combine elements of viral media, movies, and classic Halloween characters in a way that appeals to current trends. Of these, the Barbie Witch might be particularly popular due to Barbie's lasting cultural impact and the timeless appeal of witches, making it likely to resonate with a broader audience.

Why Barbie Witch?

The Barbie Witch costume works because it taps into multiple layers of pop culture. On one hand, we’ve got Barbie, whose massive cultural roots and controversial yet oft copied aesthetic took over 2023 like lightning. On the other, there’s the timeless appeal of witches—a Halloween staple for decades.

By merging these two forces, ChatGPT, with the help of RAG and a broader context analysis, nailed the ultimate combo—creative, relevant, and flexible enough to make it personal. But it’s not just about the costume itself. The RAG model ensured this wasn’t based on surface-level trends or random LLM outputs. It synthesized cultural data from the last decade and modern viral trends, giving us something with proven depth and substance.

The real takeaway here? AI-driven creativity isn’t just for fun costumes—it’s about how we can guide models to think contextually and provide insights that are timely, meaningful, and, ideally, useful. By using a vectorDB, I made sure ChatGPT pulled in the most relevant info, proving that AI can deliver more than just superficial ideas. This process shows how AI can blend synthesis, creativity, and historical trends to help us make smarter decisions—whether for a Halloween costume or a business application.
